The Downside of Diversity - Essay ExampleDiversity produces lower civic health, which is a detriment to society. Robert Putnam, a Harvard political scientist, conducted in-depth interviews with 30,000 nation across the United States (Jonas, 2007). What Putnam found was that neighbors in diverse communities trust each other roughly half as much as they do in communities that ar made up of one predominant culture. This is due to the cultural differences that exist between members of diverse communities. Further research found that diversity makes us feel uncomfortable in social settings however, diversity can thrive in the work environment. This is because a wider range of thoughts can strengthen a purpose or objective because all the weaknesses are covered. Putnams research also supports that of some of his contemporaries, who argue that people in diverse communities do not stand to common needs and goals of the community.Diversity results in a decline in social capital, a term fi rst coined by Putnam himself in some of his preceding(prenominal) studies. Social capital refers to friendships, religious institutions, and community associations, which are more likely to suffer when diversity is present in the community (Jonas, 2007). Putnam claims that high social capital makes a community a better place to live, neighborhoods are safer, people are healthier, and more citizens vote (Jonas, 2007). Putnams survey, which was conducted in a number of diverse communities across the United States, questioned many ethic groups (black, white, Hispanic, and Asian) ab protrude how they snarl about their neighbors, community, and local government. Johnson Controls - Research Paper ExampleInformation systems are also considered long-term detonator investment projects. The following are some of the traditional capital budgeting models used to evaluate capital projects The payback method The accounting rate of return on investment (ROI) The net present value The cost-benefit ratio The positiveness index The internal rate of return (IRR) These methods rely on measures of cash flows into and out of the firm. Capital projects generate cash flows into and out of the firm. The investment cost is an prompt cash outflow caused by the purchase of the capital equipment (capital outlay). In subsequent periods, the investment may cause additional cash outflows related to repair and charge that will be balanced by cash inflows resulting from the investment. Cash inflows take the form of increased revenues generated from the improved facilities or reduced costs in payoff and operations. The difference between cash outflows and cash infl ows (net cash flows) is used for calculating the monetary worth of an investment. Once the cash flows have been established, several alternative methods are available for comparing different projects and deciding about the investment. Financial models assume that all relevant alternatives have been examined, that all costs and benefits are known, and that these costs and benefits bathroom be expressed in a monetary terms. When one has to choose among many complex alternatives, these assumptions are rarely met in the real world, although they may be approximated (Aggarwal, 2002). Tangible benefits can be quantified and assigned a monetary value. Intangible benefits, such as more efficient customer service or raise employee goodwill, cannot be immediately quantified but may lead to quantifiable gains in the long run. Shim and Siegel (2008) argue that traditional capital budgeting has a number of challenges. The models do not express the risks and uncertainty of their own costs and benefits estimates cash flows are uncertain inflation may affect costs and benefits differently technologyespecially schooling technologycan change during the course of the project, causing estimates to vary greatly nonphysical benefits are difficult to quantify. These factors wreak havoc with financial models. The difficulties of measuring intangible benefits give financial models an application bias. Traditional approaches to valuing information systems investments tend to assess the profitability of individual systems projects for specific business functions. Theses approaches do not adequately send investments in IT infrastructure, testing new business models, or other enterprise-wide capabilities that could benefit the organization as a whole (Gregory, 1999). The traditional focus on the financial and technical aspects of an information system tends to overlook the social and organizational dimensions of information systems that may affect the true costs and benefits of the investment. However, there are other innovational methods that can be used as alternatives to the traditional methods. One of the approaches is the excerpt pricing or real options theory recognizes the interactions among option holders optimizing behavior, asset uncertainty, and market disciplines. Biomedical Issues in Autism Speech or Presentation

Biomedical Issues in Autism - Speech or Presentation ExampleOf special(a) interest is the toxicological perspective which is, to some extent, also related to environmental factors. One important aspect is the role of environmental toxicities that can initiate or aggravate autistic symptoms in predisposed individuals. Etiologically speaking, certain metabolic abnormalities have been blamed to play a central role towards development of autism. This is manifested by the increase incidence of inflammatory disorders of the gastrointestinal system noted in autistic children. Such metabolic differences have been investigated in various studies, and it has been suggested that it is highly likely that new(prenominal) metabolic inefficiencies of this type render autistic individuals unable to cope with toxicities prevailing in the immediate environment of such individuals. These disorders of metabolism, therefore, contribute towards the development of autism in individuals by limiting their ability to overcome the metabolic challenges posed by the environmental toxicities. A major toxicity that has been studied in this regard is the posture of dissipation amounts of mercury in the environment of those who develop this condition. Review of Current Literature Although mercury is considered to be present in trace amounts in our environment, there are points in the mercury cycle where its interaction with life forms becomes significant enough to be considered as a contributor of disease. Once it is converted into methylmercury, it becomes volatile and fat-soluble enough to get bio-accumulated in food chains (Utah.Gov). Mercury has been identified to be a neuro-toxin, and causes defects in memory, cognitive thinking, language, visual ability, and motor skills. These manifestations are more than marked in developing brains. Common sources of exposure to mercury include food (fish etc.), dental amalgam, batteries, coal, and medical products including vaccines. There have been heated debates about the nexus between mercury and autism, and it appears that the vast majority of studies which deny such linkage are carried out under the influence of those who have a vested interest in promoting the concept of mercury being safe for human consumption. The reason for this claim is the fact that sufficient evidence exists to support a link between the devil (DeSoto and Robert 165). Studies conducted to evaluate the level of mercury in hair and nail samples of autistic individuals have also pointed out that mercury can possibly act as a causative or contributive factor. The level of mercury in these tissues is considerably higher in autistic individuals as compared to their healthy counterparts (Priya and Arumugam 148). The notion that altered metabolic processes contribute towards the pathogenesis of autism due to mercury poisoning has been supported by research work. Of considerable importance is the observation that adverse reactions and abnormal devel opment in autistic individuals correlate closely to their exposure to vaccines containing mercury as their constituent element. Higher levels of mercury in autistic individuals may be attributed to a unalike or defective pattern of metabolism in these individuals (Majewska et al. 196). Studies designed to seek a relationship between elevated levels of mercury in blood and the presence of autism have found a positive

Economics Paper - Essay ExampleOn the other hand if the local currency is strong, the foreign rate of exchange will be high thus making lodges fruits to be expensive. At this situation, the company may opt for a domestic market for its products. In domestic market, the company has about power to decide on the price of its products. However this will depend on market structure of its product i.e. Whether it is a perfect competition, monopoly, or duopoly. In perfect competition market, the pricing strategy will be based on the forces of demand and supply of its product, which will be determined by the take of competition from other players in the market. Perfect competition market has a perfect elastic demand curve. Here the market determines the equilibrium price level. At this equilibrium price, the company will sell as much as it can. A slight increase in price will mean the company will sell nothing. In monopoly market structure, the company has the sole power to decide on the pri ce it will sell its product. That is why monopolist is know as notorious in charging higher price of their products. Monopoly can interfere with the demand of its product by lowering its output here the prices will go up and make more profit. In case of the company being a duopoly, it may collude with the other company that produces the same type of product and charge high prices provided that, there is trust between them. Therefore pricing strategy here will be dependent on trust and cooperation among the two market participants. Question two Most companies argon profit maximise and therefore their core objective is to maximize profit. However others aim at maximizing their sales. Profit oriented searcher will aim to produce the quantity and charge the price given by the point where peripheral revenue equals marginal cost. This is as illustrated in the diagram belowPrice searcher aiming at maximizing sales will produce as a point fit cost curve (TC) cuts total revenue curve m (T R) i.e. at the highest point possible. This is as illustrated below.Price searcher aim at maximizing sales, if his intentions are to promote the welfare of the producers i.e. to create the market to the producers products. In a nutshell, price searcher must therefore choose between maximizing profit and maximizing sales.Question threeElasticity refers to the responsiveness of quantity demanded or supplied cod to change in prices or income i.e. Change in quantity demanded or supplied due to a unit change in price or income. In this scenario I would expect demand for a specific brand of running clothe to be less elastic than the demand for running shoes in general. This is because specific brand limits the taste and preferences of a client. This in turn limits the ability of the customer choice from a wider variety. Therefore a change in price of that specific brand is likely to be highly elastic. Consumers do not receive substitute. Demand for a general brand of shoes will be more elastic since customers have

Jeremy Bentham Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words - 1

Jeremy Bentham - Essay ExampleThe main basis behind this theory is that an act can be considered to be easily or bad depending on the amount of people it is able to help against the number of people who may be inconvenienced so to speak by that identical act. In short it can be verbalize that the theory tends to focus on the greater good capacity of an act when determining whether the subject occasion is to be considered good or detrimental towards the society (Bykvist, 2009). This is clearly seen in Jeremy Benthams claim that it is actually the largest happiness from the biggest number of people that can be considered to be the measure of right and wrong. To put it simply, whether an act is good or not is determined upon the maximization of that utility in question. Something can be considered to be good or bad based on whether it brings more good or bad as an end result. This theory can be said to be both supported and contradicted by a number of nursing and healthcare practices . This can be explained by the diversity of the healthcare sector which agent that hardly whatever two cases are exactly the same thus there are times when the theory may apply to healthcare practices dapple at other times it does not (Bykvist, 2009). A good example of a healthcare practice that supports this theory is the action of quarantining an individual with a catching disease. Though such a move may be considered reclusive and even impersonal as the person is kept away from family and friends or any other support system to help them get through such hard times, it is for the greater good that it is done as allowing them contact with others may evince deadly to those who remain uninfected. A practice that may not fit into the greater good system would be the elimination of a ground nought subject who is putting other people at risk as the code of ethics does not support murder under any circumstance. In this instance the greater good is not enough to justify such an act. Two sections of the ANA Code of Ethics

Effects of Chlorinated Drinking Water Essay Example for Free

Effects of Chlorinated Drinking Water Essay centilitre is added to inebriation water, as a disinfectant, to get rid of harmful bacterium, which are ordinarily present in areas from where the water is obtained. The controversy of this issue is that chlorination hobo work as an advantage or as a disadvantage to those consuming it. Chlorine is currently the most effective water treatment when compared with other alternatives. However, it also reacts with natural organic compounds present in the water to produce harmful chemicals that on a long-term basis are very dangerous. The most well known adverse effects of bemire water is shown in the Walkerton crisis in may 2000, where an outbreak of E. Coli contamination occurred in the water system of Walkerton, Ontario. Seven people died, and a barely 2300 fell ill after consuming water that was contaminated by farm mire (Walkerton Report, CBC 2008). This could have been prevented if proper chlorination had taken place. Examples of contaminants that centiliter eliminates are microbes such(prenominal) as E. Coli, Salmonella typhi and Shigella. E.Coli grows when the water is contaminated with human and wight waste products. Upon consuming E. Coli contaminated water, an individual suffers from diarrhea, cramps, nausea, renal failure and sometimes even death. Consuming water contaminated with Salmonella typhi causes typhoid fever. Shigella causes severe abdominal cramping with note and mucus in the stool. Chlorines major advantage is that the water remains disinfected until it reaches the point of consuming, unlike other disinfectants such as ozone or unseeable light.Chlorine not besides purifies water, it also prevents bacterial growth, nitrogenous contaminants and such from growing in water pipes and storage tanks. It also gets rid of odors, unpleasant preference and organisms known as nuisance organisms. Slime bacteria, iron and sulfate reducing bacteria give the water a very unpleasant look and smell. T hese bacteria do not cause disease but chlorination gets rid of these organisms. Not provided is chlorine easy to use, it is also widely available and of low cost. However, chlorine is also associated with producing harmful byproducts as it reacts with chemicals already present in water. These products are known as disinfection by-products. They include chloroform and are known as trihalomethanes or THMs for short. Studies conducted have shown that tested animals that are exposed to high amounts of THM are at a much greater risk for cancer. Even with humans, long-term exposure to chlorination can greatly increase risks of cancer (LaPure Water Inc, 2000).Also, chlorination does not get rid of all nitrate products. It only prevents the nitrates from reaching a toxic form. These nitrates are from manure products that have not been absorbed by plants. This is not particularly dangerous to adults, but with excess levels can cause blue baby disease (methemoglobinemia) in young infants (Ni trate Health Effects in Drinking Water, McCasland). Chlorinated water also affects its taste and smell. Using chlorinated water to make coffee, tea, soups, etc changes its taste and smell.Even with these disadvantages, it is evident that the benefits of chlorination outgo the risks. With proper treatment making sure that chlorine is not added in excess and proper water testing, drinking water would be much healthier. The only major disadvantage of chlorinated water is the long-term effects of THMs. It is known that using a coulomb filter actually gets rid of THMs and other chlorination by-products. People should be made aware of this and encouraged to use carbon filters to filter the water out instead of consuming straight from the tap. There are alternatives to chlorination as well, such as ozonation, which is a method of disinfection by adding ozone gas to water and applying an electric current. It is very effective against microbes and only forms by products, which can be remov ed with further treatment. Another method of disinfectant is by Ultraviolet light treatment. This method is effective against even more microbes than chlorine is but it is also costly. However, these methods can only be used as primary disinfectants, chlorine is required as a secondary disinfectant in order to disinfect water as much as affirmable. Also, these methods are temporary the water does not remain disinfected until it reaches point of being consumed. In conclusion, chlorination is the most effective method of disinfecting water from drinking purposes. Its the only method that keeps the water clean from the point of treatment to the point of consuming it. It is also the only disinfectant that is capable of minimizing all possible health risks caused by contaminated water. The adverse effects of chlorine such as its harmful by-products can be eliminated or reduced with the use of carbon filters.

The water that is supplied from these lakes is used forAgricultureIndustriesHouseholdRecreationEnvironmental usesAgriculture agriculture is essential for the business of food and to cultivate we need water. So the water that is stored in these lakes is supplied for agricultural purposes by using pipe lines but mostly in India water take for agriculture is used from bore wells. Increase in population growth rate, overexploitation of ground water, poor sewage treatment, declining surface water resources and deterioration of ground water quality these are the major water related issues in Hyderabad. The major supply and demand issues and the factors that affect this for Hyderabad are concerned with the followingPopulation growth Hyderabad has a Population of 5.2 million and having a growth rate of 2.5% ever year is considered to be a large city and the pop ulation is very high because of this the supply and the demands needs of the citizens are not met correctly .Due to this large population supply of the required amount of water is very difficult.Increased affluence This is also an issue due to the increase in population and scantness in India increasing affluence without doubt means more water consumption from needing clean fresh water 24 hours a day, 7 age a week and basic hygiene service.Rapid urbanization Due to the rapid urbanization of the city of Hyderabad and its constant expansion because of this it requires investment in water infrastructure in order to deliver water to individuals and to process the concentrations of wastewater, because of this rapid urbanization the water supply to all the people is not going well and this has become a major issue.Expansion of business activity since Hyderabad is a large city and a site for many businesses and industries and also the number of industries and businesses are growing in a constant rate due to this it will attract many people and it will lead to urbanization an increase in population and because of this increase there will be in issue for supply of water for all these people.Climate change climatic change plays an definitive role in the supply of water for the city of Hyderabad every year the amount of rainwater is decreasing or due to the climate change the rainfall is not falling in the sufficient time. Because of this there is an issue in the supply of water for the city of Hyderabad.Pollution and water protection Due to the toss of pollution into the rivers and lakes that are produced by humans and industries surrounding Hyderabad the water in them cannot be used and the water protection is also not so chafe so we cannot use this water, due to this the supply of water is gradually decreases. This is by far one of the major issues concerned with the water bodies surrounding Hyderabad.Pressures On Water QualityIn addition to encroachments, pollu tion of lake waters by untreated domestic sewage and toxic industrial effluents has been going on over the eld in the city of Hyderabad. The lakes that used to provide drinking water do not do so now. First in the city of Hyderabad there were vatical to be six industrial areas but there are now twelve areas and also many of these industries are located near the lakes due to which all the lakes are getting polluted because of the wastes that are coming out from these industries. Because of these effluents that are coming out from the industries the lakes are change state toxic and because of this toxicity the lakes are becoming devour of any life. Some of the important rivers polluted by the industrial effluents are Bollaram, Isakavagu, Nakkavagu, and Manjeera.A study conducted by HUDA showed that 18 water bodies we most polluted while 67 were less polluted and out of the 36 lakes only 6 lakes were in useable condition. The pollution control board was unsuccessful in implying the Environment Protection Act, 1986, the Water Act, 1974 and the Air Act, 1981.HUDA gave particulars abort 169 lakes covering an area of 90.56sq.km.amongs these 25 are private, 62 are political sympathiess and 82 are partly government partly private. According to the law these areas must be kept from any construction to prevent any type of pollutions to the lakes and to allow free flow of water into the lakes. There are about 200 Central and State laws to protect environment in India (Sinha, 200147). As per section 24 of the Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1974, poisonous, pestiferous or polluting matter shall not be discharged, directly or indirectly, into water bodies, sewers or on land. Similarly, under sections 7 of the Environment Protection Act, 1986 no soul carrying on any industry, operation or process shall discharge or emit or permit to be discharged or emitted any environmental pollutant in excess of such standards as may be prescribed (Divan and Rosencr antz, 2001 653, 676).The government of Indias (GOI, 1992) policy statement on abatement of pollution declares four manoeuver principles with the objective of integrating environmental considerations into end making (Ibid. 36) (i) prevention of pollution at source, (ii)adoption of the best available technology, (iii) the polluter pays principle, and (iv) public participation in decision makingReferencingRamachandraiah, C. and Sheela Prasad (2004) Impact of urban Growth on WaterBodies The Case of Hyderabad, Working Paper No. 60, Centre for Economic and Social Studies, Hyderabad.Ramachandraiah, C.
